Characterization of non-Rayleigh Acoustic Scattering by Elongated Scatterers in the Water Column and on Boundaries

چکیده
The echo statistics associated with a randomly oriented prolate spheroid randomly located in the sonar beam are modeled. The cases of a smooth and rough spheroid, both in the water column (i.e., case in which boundaries are not involved), and on a boundary are investigated. The modeling begins with the analytical physics-based expression for the scattering amplitude of a smooth prolate spheroid. The following properties are then incorporated which leads to a random echo: randomly rough outer boundary of spheroid, random orientation, and random location in the sonar beam. The contributions of each property to the echo statistics are studied both separately and collectively. Graduate student Saurav Bhatia was funded principally to conduct this research as part of his graduate research. Kyungmin Baik, a WHOI post-doctoral fellow, also participated in the research.

The present paper is dealing with the propagation of Rayleigh surface waves in a homogeneous transversely isotropic medium .This thermo-dynamical analysis is carried out in the context of three-phase-lags thermoelasticity model. Three phase lag model is very much useful in the problems of nuclear boiling, exothermic catalytic reactions, phonon-electron interactions, phonon scattering etc. The n...
متن کاملPerformance assessment of a new class of local absorbing boundary conditions for elliptical- and prolate spheroidal-shaped boundaries
New approximate local DtN boundary conditions are proposed to be applied on ellipticalor prolate-spheroid exterior boundaries when solving respectively twoor three-dimensional acoustic scattering problems by elongated obstacles. These new absorbing conditions are designed to be exact for the first modes. They can be easily incorporated in any finite element parallel code while preserving the lo...

متن کاملAcoustic characterization of Hofstadter butterfly with resonant scatterers
We are interested in the experimental characterization of the Hofstadter butterfly by means of acoustical waves. The transmission of an acoustic pulse through an array of 60 variable and resonant scatterers periodically distribued along a waveguide is studied. An arbitrary scattering arrangement is realized by using the variable length of each resonator cavity. For a periodic modulation, the st...
